North Vancouver- Lonsdale

Resting on the shores of Burrard Inlet and rising towards the North Shore mountains, Lonsdale offers residents convenient access to Downtown Vancouver and some of the region's finest outdoor recreation areas. Lonsdale has established itself as the North Shore's institutional, commercial and cultural centre. Its traditional grid of streets offers an urban feel and helps make Lonsdale the most densely populated town centre.

Lonsdale is divided into two separate neighbourhoods, Lower and Central Lonsdale. Lower Lonsdale is centred around Lonsdale Quay, a mixed use shopping and office complex on Burrard Inlet. The Central Lonsdale planning neighbourhood is located further up the hill and runs along Lonsdale Avenue from 13th Street up to the TransCanada highway.

Housing Chart
Designed using a traditional grid system, Lonsdale is one of the most densely populated regional town centres. Its population is housed in a variety of housing types and tenures, though the majority of people live in low rise apartments. In 2001, most units (62%) were rented, providing an important supply of rental housing. According to the City, new commercial and residential units will be constructed into the foreseeable future.
Jobs
Jobs Chart
A large number of health professionals work in Lions Gate Hospital and its numerous supporting clinics. The North Shore’s central location has also resulted in many jobs in the financial sector.
Population
Lonsdale experienced a significant increase in population growth between 1991 and 2001, with the population increasing by almost 5,000. Along with a significant population of seniors, the population of 35 to 49-year olds has increased over the past ten years.
Transportation
The Trans Canada Highway, commonly referred to as the Upper Levels Highway, crosses Lonsdale Avenue at the northern boundary of the regional town centre. It provides connections to Vancouver by the Iron Workers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge to the east and the Lions Gate Bridge to the west. The SeaBus passenger ferry provides access to downtown Vancouver to over five million annual passengers from its terminal at Lonsdale Quay. Sailing every 15 minutes, the ferry also links the North Shore to the SkyTrain and West Coast Express, and to a larger public transit bus depot that provides connections across the entire North Shore. Lonsdale is also near the western terminus for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) and the southern terminus of CN rail.
Community facilities
Central Lonsdale, includes a library, civic centre, recreation centre (with swimming pool, ice rink, and curling rink), museum and archives, public gallery, and Centennial Theatre, a 718 seat performance venue. Central Lonsdale also houses the City's RCMP detachment and the 388 bed Lions Gate Hospital, which serves all three North Shore municipalities. A 35,000 square foot community centre in Lower Lonsdale opened in 2004.
Commercial-retail/offices
