Matsqui Trail Regional Park is located along 11 km of the Fraser River in the City of Abbotsford. The park provides public access to the river, is bordered on the south by agricultural lands, and includes 16.4 kilometres of dyke and non-dyke trails that are popular for pedestrian, cycling, dog-walking, and equestrian use. Fishing, camping and picnicking are other uses which contribute to the park’s 305,000 annual visitation. The park comprises 125 ha of dyke and Fraser River foreshore.

The management plan for Matsqui Trail Regional Park will set up a policy framework that helps to express a common understanding of the park’s future (vision, goal & objectives), identify opportunities and constraints for various park uses, and make management intentions transparent and the decisions of staff and management accountable.

New!  Update - May 10, 2012

To update you on the planning process, we are currently working to refine the Draft Concept presented at the January 24, 2012 public open house, confirming feasibility and completing detailed review with First Nations, agencies and the City of Abbotsford. On May 2, the Metro Vancouver Environment and Parks Committee endorsed several revisions to the Draft Concept which include:

Mission Bridge
A 5,000 to 10,000 square foot area for a potential food service (ie food truck/restaurant/café) has been identified and added to the Draft Concept. Given the proposed vision of the Mission Bridge Node as a highly active, dynamic river destination, this was seen as an amenity that would complement the other program elements (boat launch, open space, picnic area) and enhance the user experience at this site.
Central Matsqui Trail - Zone A
The 25 site, car-access campground has been removed from the Draft Concept due to site limitations (flooding, lack of servicing). A rustic group campground is still included in the Draft Concept which will accommodate groups of 6-40 people. Campers will be able to access the site on foot, bicycle, from the water or by vehicle drop off. In the future there maybe potential to expand the accommodation options at this site to include yurts or tree house type facilities that would be resilient to site limitations.

Below are pdfs of the revised Draft Mission Bridge Concept, Draft Central Matsqui Trial - Zone A Concept and the Draft Overall Park Concept. In the coming weeks we will continue to refine the Draft Concept and provide updates on this website. We expect to have a final Draft Management Plan for MV Environment and Parks Committee approval complete by Summer, 2012. Fast Facts

Located in Abbotsford, Matsqui Trail Regional Park stretches for 11 kilometres along the foreshore of the Fraser River--the largest watershed in British Columbia.

A resident in the waters off Matsqui Trail Regional Park, the white sturgeon—a red-listed species in BC—has survived two ice ages and is the largest freshwater fish in Canada.

A Bald Eagle nest can be seen in a massive cottonwood in the fields on the north side of the dyke trail, between Walters Street and Beharrell Road. Two young eagles were spotted in the nest in the summer of 2010.
